When I was not checking out awesome sights to see during my trip to Italy or driving around the ceaseless roundabouts, I was eating all kinds of food. Below are some pictures of my favorite stuff that I ate while over there. There were a couple of meals that were so good that I forgot to even bother with a picture. But just about everything was really great and rather cheap for how good it was.

Kinja'd!!!

Shrimp and fresh pasta. Had a nice fried mozzarella block for appetizer and gelato for dessert.

Kinja'd!!!

Tuna and avocado salad. This was some meaty tuna!! Best salad I have had by far.

Kinja'd!!!

Fruit Smoothie at the tuna place. Girlfriend enjoyed it, very fresh!

Kinja'd!!!

Bought 7 lemons at a roadside stand and forgot I cant bring them through customs, so lemon juice!

Kinja'd!!!

Beautifully cooked rare steak filet! Absolutely great choice.

Kinja'd!!!

Our host in Tuscany baked us a fresh fruit pie and gave us some fresh eggs from her hen.

Kinja'd!!!

Pizza! Definitely reminds me of NJ/NY pizza from home but much less greasy.

Kinja'd!!!

Spaghetti with salmon and Fettuccini Alfredo

Overall we were both very happy with everything we ate. Even the random chicken sandwich I had in the Vatican City was decent. Plus many trips to bakeries for fresh bread, croissants, and cannoli. Also gelato nearly every day! I think that I could definitely eat in Italy every day forever and be happy. One thing I did notice though is that many Italian restaurants at home really do most things right. The only thing they get wrong is portion sizing but that is just a culture difference I suppose. In Italy, you are supposed to eat your whole meal and leave content whereas in the US you are supposed to eat your meal and leave absolutely stuffed and with leftovers.

Oh and one important food item I didn’t get a picture of was Spaghetti Carbonara! That tasted like bacon cooked in magic!!

Best part is we didn’t even go to super fancy or expensive places. So there has ought to be even better stuff to find. Although most of the places were definitely highly rated on tripadvisor.

Fancy or expensive doesn’t always mean better. You were smart listening to your tripadvisor.

A friend did one of those cycling/eating/wine drinking tours of Italy and I can't think of a better vacation. I love Italian food.

And....the price on the menu is the price you pay. None of the “add on six layers of tax and your share of the staff wages” nonsense that they have in America.

If there’s one thing Italians can’t make, it’s Pizza ironically enough. Where’s the meat? Where are the toppings?

The rest of it looks awesome though.

Well my girlfriend only likes pizza with just cheese and nothing else (no sauce and no meat). But I always load up my pizzas with all sorts of stuff when I home make one. But this one for me was Amatriciana pizza so it had bacon and onions on it. Perfect for a late breakfast/early lunch that we had while driving Rome to Siena. We also ate at a pizza place in Rome that was actually really good. I think it is the crust that is just done really well and its the perfect balance between thin and thick. I certainly still like NY pizza better but its just different really.

Yeah, the occasional service fee was much fairer since it was a flat fee no matter what you spent. Usually like 3 euro at most and only generally in the touristy areas. Only “extra” expense vs American restaurants is paying for water. Generally I just want tap water but that doesn’t appear to be a thing in Europe. That and taking leftovers home with you. But otherwise, I definitely prefer the not having to calculate a tip at the end or pay sales tax on top of everything.

Even better when you can be lazy and drive everywhere instead lol. Doing Europe the American way!

Also, I really don’t think they invented pizza in Italy. It seems like pizza was invented in the US by Italian immigrants and then it filtered back to Italy. So its more of an American import food lol.

Yea I’m more of a connoisseur of Chicago, Detroit, St Louis or California style pizzas (yes I Googled pizza styles). Even the New York slice is too thin for me. But I don’t like to eat with my hands and eating something that thin with a fork and a knife is stupid so that’s probably why.

Wikipedia disagrees with that, but I feel like you’re right anyways.

Ah, but Italy has its own little habits. Cover charges and bottled water for about €2 a pop are the rule. I’m more familiar with France - no cover and they supply tap water on request.
